PCMG’s mission is to provide a representative forum for primary care clinicians involved in metabolic disease management and raise standards of patient care through the dissemination of best practices, education programs, and communication among members.

NEW Commentary: Depression and Diabetes: An Update from the 69th Annual ADA Scientific Sessions
7/2/2009: Presentations at the recent ADA meetings in New Orleans contribute to our understanding of the association between depression and bad diabetes outcomes. We learned that people who have diabetes are 1.5 to 2 times more likely to be depressed than people in the general population, and that depression in people with diabetes is associated with higher blood glucose levels, higher complication and mortality rates, and higher health care costs.  Read More

NEW Commentary: Evaluation and Management of Patients with Low HDL Cholesterol
6/9/2009: Low levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) can significantly increase one’s cardiovascular risk and be challenging to treat. Coronary artery disease risk remains elevated in patients with low HDL-C even after metabolic improvement for obesity, blood pressure, total cholesterol and LDL-C. The term “isolated low HDL cholesterol” refers to the situation in which total  cholesterol or LDL-C are in the “ideal range” but the HDL-C is low.  Read More

NEW Commentary: Issues of Adherence: Getting Patients With Metabolic Syndrome to Goal
5/21/2009: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death worldwide in adult men and women and is responsible for as many as 17 million deaths annually in the U.S.  The metabolic syndrome is a disorder comprised of major risk factors that can increase a patient’s risk for CVD.  National guidelines recommend we treat patients who meet the criteria for metabolic syndrome as a potential secondary target of therapy.  Read More

NEW Commentary: New Diabetes Drug, Saxagliptin, on the Horizon Following Added Safety Review
4/21/09: Saxagliptin, a new oral antihyperglycemic drug being developed by Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. is the first drug to pass the hurdle of added scrutiny under FDA’s new safety guidelines for diabetes treatments entering the market.  On April 1, the FDA Endocrinologic and Metabolic Drugs Advisory Committee voted 10 – 2 that there is adequate evidence to demonstrate that saxagliptin is not associated with excess cardiovascular risk. Read More
